Krishna took birth at midnight on the ashtami, or the 8th day of the Krishnapaksha or dark fortnight in the Hindu month of Shravan (August-September). This auspicious day is called Janmashtami. Indian, as well as Western scholars, have now accepted the period between 3200 and 3100 BCE as the period in which Lord Krishna lived on earth.
The celebrations of Janmashtami include fasting, singing, group prayer, preparing and sharing food, and visiting temples. Major Krishna temples feature recitations of the Bhagavata Purana and the Bhagavad Gita.
This year it will be celebrated on Tuesday, August 15. Our Mandir will be also celebrating this event. More details will be added to home page close to the date.
